An opener rarely dies quietly. The remote starts working only from the end of the drive, the motor hums but will not pull, the door reverses at the same spot every time, or the whole unit is dark after a windstorm. Two causes dominate here and both come from the weather. And the damp corrodes low-voltage wiring at the points where staples pierce the insulation — which produces the classic complaint of an opener that works in dry weather and not in wet. Testing the wiring before condemning the board is the difference between a cheap fix and an unnecessary unit.
There is a third, purely local fault: needles and sap on the sensor lenses. Conifer debris blows into a garage opening constantly here, and fir sap in particular leaves a film that is almost invisible but perfectly capable of blocking an infra-red beam. A door that reverses for no apparent reason is often solved with a lens clean and a realignment, and if that is the answer you do not pay for sensors.
