Mercer Island sits in Lake Washington between Bellevue and Seattle, reached by the I-90 bridges. It is largely built out with 1950s and 1960s mid-century houses alongside newer and much larger replacements, on lots that drop steeply toward the water along narrow, winding lanes.
The island's original housing left us a specific speciality: real cedar and fir doors, and the timber jambs they hang in, now sixty or seventy years into a wet climate. Those need reading rather than assuming — a jamb that looks painted and sound can be soft behind the film, and hanging good hardware on softened timber is work that fails. We probe, we anchor into sound material, and we say plainly when a jamb needs replacing rather than fixing around it. The second island factor is simply access: lanes are narrow, driveways drop away sharply, and turning a service truck takes thought. We plan that before we arrive.
